A
Your Genes, Your Future
How would you feel if someone gave you an envelope with a description of every one of your genes? Supposing this information could tell you what illnesses you were likely to get, or even what illness you might die of, would you open the envelope?
Its a difficult question to answer. But the fact is that scientists have already begun to discover how certain genes influence us. And in the next decade, they will learn a lot more.
We have known for a long time that many of our physical characteristics are inherited. For example, our eye colour and certain diseases are decided by our genes. As long as you have a good diet, scientists can predict your height by looking at your parents heights. And we now know that the need to wear glasses has a genetic cause. Our eating habits also appear to be decided by our genes!
With other characteristics, things are not so clear. Certainly, scientists have now shown that some traits are strongly influenced by our genes. Do you prefer getting up early or late? To a great extent, its your genes that decide, Do you enjoy dangerous sports such as car racing? There is a gene that influences how much excitement we need.
But with most psychological characteristics, scientists are learning that both our genes and our environment affect us. This is true of things such as how violent we are, and how well we get on with other people. So, even though scientists may soon be able to describe our genes in detail, it does not mean they will be able to predict our future with any real success.
Nevertheless, the fact is that scientists will be able to "read" our genes in the near future. This will create new problems. To give a few examples, insurance companies may not want to insure people whose genes predict certain illnesses. Employers may not want to employ people who have a gene for violence. One thing is already clear -- with these new developments, life is going to become even more complicated!
56. Which characteristics is mostly likely to be inherited?
   A. Eye color.      B. Interest.       C. Future.     D. Ability.
57. What kind of problem will these new developments create?
   A. You may die of a certain illness described in the envelope.
   B. There will be an increased number of violent people.
   C. People may take part in dangerous sports such as car racing.
   D. Insurance companies may refuse to insure people with a gene for certain disease.
58. Why won’t scientists be able to tell us a lot about our future?
   A. Because we’re affected not only by our genes but also by our environment.
   B. Because scientists will not able to read our genes in the near future.
   C. Because life in the future will be more complicated.
   D. Because scientists can’t describe our genes in detail.
B
Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help to prevent drought and floods.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It gained the empire but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation.
Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food with, and he can earn money by making charcoal(木炭) or selling wood to the townsman(城市居民). He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that the villager’s sons and grandsons have fewer trees. The results are even more serious. For where there are trees their roots break the soil up—allowing the rain to sink in and also hold the soil, thus preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor. The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well. When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert.
59. The purpose that the writer wrote this article is to ______.
     A. tell people the use of wood      B. tell people the function of tree roots
     C. warn that man mustn’t destroy forests any more
D. explain how trees help to prevent drought and floods
60. In the writer’s opinion,_____, or the forests will slowly disappear.
     A. measures must be taken     B. people shouldn’t draw benefit from the tree
     C. government must realize the serious results
     D. unless trees never be cut down
61 According to the article we know it is _____ to prevent the forests from slowly disappearing.
     A. necessary but impossible     B. necessary but difficult
     C. impossible and unimportant   D. difficult and impossible
62. In the last two paragraphs the writer wanted to make it clear that _____ .
     A. where there are no trees, the soil becomes poor but soft
     B. where there are many trees, there are more floods
     C. where there are no trees, the land might become desert slowly
     D. floods will make the land become desert
C
When the famous dancer Fred Astaire was interviewed for a job by a Hollywood producer, the movie “expert” turned him down, saying, “Can’t sing. Can’t act. Dances a little.” Here’s another stupid mistake. When the great scientist Albert Einstein was at school, his teachers considered him rather dull. And a final story, the famous Polish pianist Paderewski was told by a teacher that he’d never be a success as a performer because the middle finger on each hand was too short.
What lessons can be drawn from these three experiences? First, true genius (天才) cannot be suppressed(压抑). For some reason or other it works its way out. Second, early judgements of a person’s abilities may be unfair or just wrong. Third, when there is a real determination to succeed, obstacles(障碍) fall by the wayside.
The famous motto “ad astra per aspera” can be translated as “To the stars through hardships.” Astaire, Einstein and Paderewski proved their critics wrong.

Third-generation mobile phones, known as 3G, are the next big step for the telecom industry. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have high-speed Internet access and enjoy video and CD-quality music on their phones.
“Mobile data is not a dream; it’s not an option but a requirement,” said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.
With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday’s news; a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.
Face-to-face video calls
Don’t worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.
However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
Many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US Government issued five license to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year.
International telecom companies can’t wait to sell 3G in China, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment, China is busy testing its 3G-based technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.
“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile. “We expect that the 3G licenses will be issued late next year.”

Science is developing so fast that it is beyond our imagination. Cloning is one of the more advanced technologies. Is it good or bad? Different people have different opinions.
Some people think we can benefit from it. Firstly, it can be used to produce valuable tissues and organs that could be used to cure diseases like cancer. Secondly, It can be used to help those who are unable to have a baby but want a baby genetically related to themselves. Besides, it can help those who want to clone their dead children.
But some people think cloning shows no respect for human life, and human life would no longer be unique. More seriously, it would create more disease in the animal world and cause Earth’s population growth.
In my opinion, although the technique is beneficial to mankind in many aspects, cloning human beings will be at the cost of the existence of mankind itself.
