阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中, 选出最佳选项.

A

Everyone knows that diamonds are special. They are so beautiful that everyone likes them. They have many special meanings, and are also the hardest minerals on Earth.

A new study suggests that even people in ancient China appreciated the wonder of diamonds. About 6,000 years ago the Chinese may have used diamonds to polish (磨光) their stone axes (斧). That would push back by several thousand years the date of the first known use of diamonds.

To reach this conclusion, Peter Lu, a physicist at Harvard University, studied four ancient burial(埋藏) axes found in two tombs in southern China. The axes date back to between 4000 and 2500 BC.

Lu used special microscopes and other high-tech equipment to study them and finally found out that the axes were mainly made up of three minerals. The most plentiful mineral was known as corundum (金刚砂).

Finding corundum was a surprise, because it’s the second hardest mineral on Earth. Since diamonds are the only mineral harder than corundum, Lu thought that the ancient Chinese must have used diamonds to shape and polish their axes.

To test this theory, Lu used a diamond knife to cut a piece from the burial axes. Then he tried polishing the new surface with three materials: diamond, corundum, and quartz (石英). Only diamond produced a surface that was as smooth as the original(原创的).

The new research also suggests that people in Stone Age China may have used diamonds to polish jade(玉) and give it various shapes. These ancient people may have had much more technical ability than experts had ever guessed.

Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain’s most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted(采用) by a much larger group-the business group. www.jkzyw.com

You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn’t wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.

This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.

“Ties offer a point of indifference,” says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers, “They give a chance to say something about their own personality.”

So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.

Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to be rare among the new bread of entrepreneurs (创业者) in the Internet and new technology Industries. Many political leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people-but not the people wearing ties. www.jkzyw.com

Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Kennedy never wore a hat-in fact his nickname was “hatless Jack”. Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to, either. Hats simply vanished across the Western world. Perhaps “tieless Tony” (former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as “hatless Jack”.

55. In Britain, ties were first used as a sign to show a person’s       .

       A. personality           B. social position      C. wearing style       D. favorite hobby

56. The underlined word “vanished” in this passage may mean        .

       A. sold                     B. washed                C. appeared             D. disappeared

57. The writer may hold the opinion that       .

       A. Blair is the best leader in the world

       B. Kennedy is the best leader in the world

       C. millions of people will go to work without a tie

       D. people will wear hats instead of ties

58. Which of the following statements is TURE according to the passage?

       A. If you are a professional, you can’t wear a tie in Britain.

       B. The tie will become more fashionable and popular in the future.

       C. It was the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States that changed the fact that wearing hats as part of their business uniform.

       D. Men across the western world didn’t wear hats as part of their business uniform until around 1960. www.jkzyw.com

C

For a leader, honesty and integrity(正直)are essential to survival. A lot of business people don’t realize how closely they’re being watched by all their workers. It’s highly unlikely that they can get away with not being completely honest with them. As long as leaders give their workmen reason to trust them, they won’t go looking for reasons to think otherwise, and will appreciate their positive qualities.

Here’s an example. The wife of a company workman, some years ago, experienced complications(并发症)in the delivery of a baby. There was a medical bill of more than $10,000, and the health insurance(保险) company didn’t want to cover it. The workman was hopeless. He came near the company CEO and asked him to talk to the insurance people. The CEO agreed, and the next thing the workman knew was that the bill was gone and the charges had been paid. When he told his partners about the way the CEO had so readily used his influence with the insurance company, they just smiled .The CEO had paid the bill out of his own pocket ,and everybody knew it, no matter how discreetly(小心地) it had been done. Dishonesty can’t be hidden ,and destroys authority, but integrity and kindness are just as clear. When you’re in a leadership position you choose how you will be seen.

Families have even higher standards(标准) of honesty and integrity. You can replace unsatisfactory workmen, or even get a new job for yourself. But you’re stuck with your family. Kids are great moral philosophers(哲学家), especially as they reach young adulthood. They’re determined to discover and expose any kind of shortage of integrity in the people who say to have authority over them.

“Hope of dishonest gain is the beginning of loss”. You can have all the material things in the world, but if you’ve lost your self-respect, what do you really have? The only way to both win success and to keep it is to achieve it honestly, with pride in what you’ve done.

59.                                  According to the author it is impossible for      .

       A. workers find out their leader is dishonest

       B. a dishonest leader to escape being punished

       C. an honest leader to get respect

       D. workers to get along well with their leader

60.                                  The reason why the workman was hopeless was that      .

       A. he couldn’t afford his wife’s treatment expense

       B. his wife had a serious disease

       C. the company CEO didn’t tell him the truth

       D. his wife’s complications had cost him a lot of money

61.  The underlined word in the last paragraph refers to “      ”.

       A. loss of money                                      B. loss of self-respect

       C. loss of quality                                      D. loss of leadership

62.                                  What’s the main idea of this passage?

       A. People tend to connect leadership with fear.

       B. Honesty is the key to business success.

       C. A family leader should develop his own personality.

       D. Good leadership requires honesty and integrity.

When you’re sick, you can take medicine to help you fight off infection, lower you fever, or clear your stuffy nose. But once the drugs leave your body, chances are they’ll find their way into nearby lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.

While medicines are meant to help people feel better, they may be not good for wildlife. Over the past several years, scientists have begun to test the levels of common drugs in freshwater ecosystems(生态系统). Researchers also are starting to learn more about how medicines for humans affect the animals that accidentally take in the drugs.

Recently, several scientists tested how a group of drugs called antidepressants (抗抑郁剂)affects freshwater fish. For many people with an illness called depression, antidepressants can be lifesavers. People with depression may feel sad or anxious for extremely long periods of time, lose interest in activities they once enjoyed, and have difficulty sleeping or fixing their attention on their work. Antidepressants help reduce these symptoms(症状) in some people.

Several years ago, researchers discovered that some kinds of fish living near wastewater treatment plants had antidepressants in their brains. This finding inspired a number of scientists to learn how these drugs affect fish and other wildlife.

In their experiments, researchers exposed several kinds of fish in a laboratory to different brands of antidepressants. Then the scientists tested the fishes’ responses to a number of things, such as the signs of predators give or the appearance of prey(猎物).

The researchers found that antidepressants affect fish species in numerous ways, from decreasing their responses to predators (掠夺者) to slowing down their hunting. One unexpected result was that a type of antidepressant called fluoxetine acts like estrogen(雌激素), a primarily female hormone (荷尔蒙), when in the bodies of adult male minnows (鲤科小鱼).

Fluoxetine caused these male minnows to produce an egg protein normally made only by females. In addition, males exposed to fluoxetine did not have the bright colors and facial characteristics that usually attract females. More testing needs to be done to determine whether these changes affect the reproduction of minnows.

It’s important to keep in mind that in any lake or stream, fish and other organisms(生物) aren’t just exposed(暴露) to antidepressants, Schultz says. Antibiotics(抗生素) and even caffeine all make their way through water treatment plants and back into the environment. What happens to animals when they’re exposed to all of these drugs in combination? For now, nobody knows, Schultz says-leaving the door open to much future research.

67.                                  According to the passage, scientists did the research in order to

       A. study how antidepressants influence fish and other wildlife.

       B. discover a new cure for depression.

       C. test the responses of fish to environmental influences.

       D. find out how drugs get into the waters.

68.                                  If minnows take in antidepressants, they will      .

       A. gradually all become female.

       B. lose some sexual characteristics.

       C. lose the ability to multiply quickly.

       D. react more slowly to everything.

69.                                  From the passage we can infer that      .

       A. all human drugs are poisonous to wildlife.

       B. we should consider whether any drug will affect wildlife before using it.

       C. fish and other animals will die out from the drugs in water.

       D. scientists will research the effects on wildlife of all the drugs in combination.

70.                                  Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?

       A. Drugs make the processing of waste water difficult.

       B. Mood-strengthening drugs make unhappy fish.

       C. Drugs for human can also cure the disease of the fish.

       D. Scientists call on governments to stop drugs from getting into water.
